About Sphalerite - History and Introduction
Sphalerite is a zinc ore mineral that typically contains iron. When it has a high iron content, sphalerite is an opaque black. Gem-quality material has a low iron content, resulting in transparent crystals. Due to its lack of hardness, it is mainly a collector's gemstone but pieces are often set in jewelry. One of the most notable characteristics of sphalerite is its high dispersion (0.156). In fact, the dispersion of sphalerite is over three times that of diamond, which has a dispersion of 0.044. This means that sphalerite has remarkable "fire"; the separation of visible light into colors by refraction or diffraction. In simple terms, this refers to the flashes of color seen when sphalerite is turned in the light.
I purchased these stones to show the complete spectrum of available colors. I've included receipts for each showing sizes and individual prices paid. This is truly a rare collection and listed at a fraction of value. Serious collectors can buy with confidence that all gemstones are in perfect display condition. All are carefully arranged in a small glass front case. Smoke and pet free.
I truly want to provide as much information as I can. All stones were purchased from JTV as they are a very good source for collectible loose gems. I viewed and sent back many stones as I created this collection while viewing for cut, clarity and color within the Sphalerite family of gemstones. It has the highest dispersion of light which gives it the sparkle and array of rainbow effects of reflective light. I collected in an attempt to achieve all colors from near colorless to the deep browns and reds of the gem. Stones were carefully used only for my viewing pleasure and kept in a safety deposit box in the meantime. I've had the pleasure of collecting and viewing. Now it is possible to share my collection with someone who has the same passion for gemstones. JTV has a 'Vault' series of very collectible stones and receipts will say which ones are from that collection. The large rectangle was from a collection called 'Over The Rainbow' which JTV acquired and it was somewhat famous as the originator of that collection apparently toured the collection before JTV became the owner of the collection. All stones are in perfect mint condition and were handled with extreme care and collected for the pure sense of collection and enjoyment.
