Historic picture taken in Ark City, KS by Buchanan Photography, Kiowa, KS of over 300 members of the Grand Lodge AOUW (Ancient Order of United Workmen) of Kansas at their annual session in March of 1913. This fraternal organization was founded in PA in 1868 to provide social and financial benefits after the Civil War, it was the first organization of its kind to offer
policies to cover
sickness, accident, death and burial
.
The gentlemen in this photo are wearing suits and ties, many wearing or holding hats, and most wearing their AOUW badges with ribbon backers. Faces and other small details are crisp and clear, note the gentleman in the center front holding a flower bouquet. Location is Ranney's Opera House, address in 1913 was South Summit St. Built prior to 1897 at a cost of 0,000., the building was one of the finest between KC and Denver.
