c1910 IMPROVED ORDER OF RED MEN SCREW-BACK LAPEL PIN - GILT, ENAMEL - T O T E

Description

This item was purchased from an estate with a very large collection of lapel pins, which the collector had bagged by years.  This pin was in a bag labeled
circa
1910, but this has not been confirmed.
This scarce screw-back lapel pin is a membership pin from the Improved Order of Red Men, a fraternal organization founded in 1834.  The very attractive design includes several (at least seven!) colors of enamel and gilt metal.  The headband has the gilt letters
T O T E
(secret motto of the organization).  There is
no mark for either metal content or manufacturer, but the
composition is a gilt non-magnetic metal.  There is a threaded post and screw-on 'button' for attachment.  This lapel pin measures approximately 12 x 15 mm (nearly 1/2 x 5/8"), and the large 'button' is approximately 14 mm (nearly 9/16") in diameter, a large size typical of such items from the early 1900s.
This item is in very fine condition with light signs of handling, and it is very bright.  The 'button' attaches easily and securely.
