The advantages of this product
Zinc sulfide (ZnS) crystallizes in several polytypes, the two main ones being sphalerite and wurtzite. Although the ideal formula is ZnS, wurtzite is slightly deficient in sulfur (ZnS1-x) and sphalerite is slightly deficient in zinc (Zn1-xS). The resinous luster becomes metallic when the iron level increases. The color varies from colorless (very pure sphalerite) to yellow-brown; with iron, it turns black.
When pure, is a bad semiconductor, but it can contain in solid solution up to 50% iron and can also be weakly argentiferous. Manganese and cadmium can also replace zinc.
Sphalerite is used as a geothermometer, because the FeS content is always maximum depending on the temperature and pressure of formation (up to 40-45 mole%). By surface weathering, sphalerite can give rise to smithsonite and hemimorphite (calamine), which are mined together for the production of zinc. The variety rich in manganese has the particularity of Triboluminescence. Transparent varieties are cut as a collector's gem.
