Our birds are Greenfire AND Feather Lovers Farms stock. We CULL our birds. Not many folk do that! The meat is dark and exquisitely flavored like pheasant or partridge! Other birds have been sold as "pet" quality, as we continue to refine our birds according to their blackness
Our stock have NO colored feathers, NO white toenails and they have jet black combs, legs, vents and wattles, but see my notes at the end on genetics!
We suggest using the awesome Brinsea Mini II Advance 7-Egg incubator This has auto everything and we highly recommend it for all your small-scale hatching requirements and yes we have FOUR of them!
We also send a two page instruction sheet on how to handle eggs after they have been received by you to help you achieve the best hatch rate possible.
Eggs will be shipped by INSURED USPS Priority Mail.
We pack hatching (and eating!) eggs WAY better than anyone we know, and am VERY conscientious about shipping the freshest eggs possible, but
WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR HATCHING FAILURES
In case of visibly damaged eggs, or eggs delayed in shipping to a point beyond viability, BUYERS will need to file a claim with USPS.
USPS allows claims to be made after a 15 day shipping period has elapsed. IF they arrive, for example, on Day 13, you would have to present VISIBLY DAMAGED eggs to your local post office.. AND the original shipping box so it can be scanned in order for YOU to make a claim. We are no longer able to claim for loss from THIS end, as USPS insists that the original package and contents is to be presented to the local PO .. and that is IMPOSSIBLE for us to do as the package is with the customer!
What "THEY" won't tell you about Ayam Cemani "GOTH" chickens!
You have probably all now heard of the Ayam Cemani aka the Indonesian Jungle Fowl aka The "Goth" Chicken, or, as Business Insider described them "The Lambourghini of Chickens". You were probably wowed, as we were, when you read something like this from 2013:
"Paul Bradshaw, a breeder in
Florida at Greenfire Farms, sells chickens for ,500...per chicken, that is.
And ,999 for a juvenile pair."
Heck, you WANT one - or maybe two, don't you? And so at the outset,a few folks, promoting and recognising the demand, got VERY rich! However, there is a lot about Ayam Cemani that breeders do NOT tell you, and I include the main breeders of these imported birds, Greenfire Farms (9 per chick) and Feather Lovers Farms (0 per chick), and that is for every "true black" bird they hatch and raise for breeding, there will be several DOZEN others that will not be completely perfect. Well, from the reviews, it looks like that 9 chick can grow gold, white or silver feathers, so buyer beware! This is not the company's fault because as I will explain later, it is all about the genetics of these birds. BTW Greenfire reviews can ONLY be found on Yelp and NOT on their site. Funny that!
Now,
when we started with Ayam Cemanis at Shady Grove Farm, it was with hatching
eggs from EBAY, but after culling MOST of the birds that we hatched from 0
worth of eggs at 7 months of age for the freezer, we decided to go with chicks
from the above hatcheries, with the expectation that we would get "all
black chicks". I was quite shocked to receive one 0 chick from Feather
Lovers Farm with pink toes and white toenails. I had read a LOT of complaints
about the quality of birds received, and, prior to their shipment, threatened
them that if our 00 worth of day old chicks birds weren't REALLY good, then
I would demand a refund through my credit card company and return the chicks. I
suspect that they struggled to find 11 really nice ones, and "Pinky"
was considered the next best! Pinky went to freezer camp! Note that even a bird
that seems oh-so-perfect at hatch, could STILL grow silver, gold or white
feathers. That is the case with one of these reviews of Greenfire chicks Yahoo
. The combs will also likely end up as "Mulberry" instead of jet
black. Go to the Greenfire page for Cemani chicks, and the roo at the top of
their page definitely has that Mulberry comb!
However, if you go to ANY breeder's web site you will NOT be told that this is the norm and not the exception, so that is why I am telling you this now. As for the black tongue? I have seen estimated from Indonesian breeders that only one bird in 1,000 will have that black tongue! IMPORTANT – many birds hatched with pink toes or a few silver or gold hackle feathers DO, after 9 months or so, become completely black. Likewise, that rooster with the dead black comb? When he gets into his second year, he will likely “mulberry up”. These are just two of our own observations.
Now, many folks offer hatching eggs on EBAY, which is where we got ours in the early days. I will tell you for nothing that there are a whole bunch of folks who hatch a few Cemani chicks from eggs, raise them, and instead of culling the "flawed" chicks, they use them to produce eggs for a quick buck, and of course, they eventually end up with legions of teed-off customers who don't understand why they have a bunch of silver or gold-necked Cemanis, pink digits, white feathers, or whatever. These people also noticed, like we did, that the roosters are mainly affected. Regarding the colour, even though we have culled or sold ALL birds that have white toenails, pink toes, red combs and wattles, and coloured feathers, or moved them to our Heritage laying flock, we are STILL hatching SOME birds with many of the above faults, so BE PREPARED TO CULL! I have estimated, from our own experience, that 90% of "unsuitable stock" are roosters and only around 15% of these are female. THAT is when I started researching the genetics of these birds and found some interesting facts.
The fibromelanistic (pignented) traits express pretty well in Ayam Cemani hens, but
the fibro gene is a RECESSIVE trait in the male Ayam Cemanis. That is why that
"perfect" rooster that has black everything can sell for thousands of
$$'s. So far we have sold, or killed some 74 roosters for the freezer,
including ALL of the 9 per chick Greenfire Farms roosters, and three of the
six Gold Feather Farms own line birds, to get just six pure black ones, and
only ONE of those had that incredibly rare black tongue! Our next steps were to
try to identify any "less than perfect" hens and move them to our
regular Heritage laying flock. We have already weeded out the major "faults"
so are now looking at who has the lightest coloured tongues and vents for
example. As we continue to hatch these birds, we will look to remove any with
floppy combs or other obvious faults so that we have a beautiful flock of
healthy, active birds. However, even then, we KNOW that many birds that we
hatch will still end up as pets, or will be sent to freezer camp around 7 months
of age, when they dress out at 2 1/2 to 3 lbs, which is fine too, as Ayam
Cemani, with their dark, blackish-grey meat, when cooked in the crockpot, taste
absolutely stunning; like Red-Legged Partridge or Pheasant, or quail. And yes,
you CAN buy a 2 lb oven-ready Ayam Cemani for around 0 apiece online PLUS
shipping of course UNLESS you collect them from the farm here in West Virginia,
as we have a bunch of ready-to-cook, vac-packed frozen gourmet birds for your
delight and delectation at just /lb!
